What is digital marketing?

Digital marketing is the unique way of marketing with the blessing of the Internet and online-based laptop, computers, or mobile phones to promote products and services as digital platforms became rapidly incorporated into society and social media and creeping into people’s drawing-room to the bedroom to become the most vital voice or vox populi and reflect people’s opinion, hobbies, lifestyle, and buying capacity of the person by a large. People increasingly started to use digital devices instead of leading shops physically.

The reason behind the popularity of digital marketing campaigns:

Digital marketing campaigns have become popular by using search engine optimization (SEO), search engine marketing (SEM), content marketing, content automation, campaign marketing, data-driven marketing, e-commerce marketing, social media marketing, social media optimization, direct email marketing, display advertising, e-books, and optical disks and games have become commonplace.

Digital marketing extends to engage customers through non-Internet channels that provide digital media, such as television, mobile phones (SMS and MMS), click SMS, missed call, and on-hold mobile ring tones. The spread to non-Internet channels differentiates digital marketing from online marketing.

A brief history of online marketing:

The development of digital or online marketing is inseparable from 1971 when Ray Tomlinson at first sent the email, and his technology set the platform to allow people to send and receive files through different machines.

In the 1990s, the Digital Marketing term was first coined; it led to the very first clickable ad being going live in 1994, which was the “You Will” campaign by AT&T.

In the year 2000, with the introduction of the iPhone and smartphone, customers began selecting products on their needs.

With the magical intrusion of social media such as LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter, consumers became highly dependent on digital electronics or online or virtual marketing.  Therefore, they expected a smooth user experience across different channels for searching the product’s information.

Digital marketing is also called ‘online marketing,’ ‘internet marketing,’ or ‘web marketing.’   In the USA, online marketing is yet to be a popular term.

The new non-linear approach to Marketing:

Nonlinear marketing is a kind of interactive marketing that has a long-term marketing approach, and it builds on collective information about an Internet user’s online activities and trying to be visible in multiple areas.

Unlike traditional marketing techniques, which direct, one-way messaging to consumers print to radio, television advertising,  digital marketing strategies are centered on reaching prospective customers across multiple online channels.

Search engine optimization (SEO):

The search engine optimization process may be used to improve the visibility of business websites as well as brand-related content for common industry-related search queries.

Search engine marketing (SEM):-

SEM means the purchase of ad space in visible positions on top of search results. Search ads greatly affect brand recognition, awareness, and conversions.

  1. Social media marketing: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube are the top platforms currently used by social media marketing teams.
  2. Content marketing: 56% of marketers believe personalized content – brand-centered blogs, social updates, videos, landing pages – improves brand recall and engagement.
